This authentic Ankara print fabric is made of 100% cotton. It was printed via the wax- resist method that originated in Indonesia and was industrialized by Dutch manufacturers of African prints in the mid-nineteenth century. Traditionally, Batik fabrics were created by hand-painting intricate designs onto cloth using beeswax. Colors were then added to the design and the waxed areas would “resist” the penetration of the dye. When the wax was removed, the patterns were revealed. The modernized process utilizes digital printing and the uses of wax, during and after printing, vary. Some of our Ghanaian-sourced fabrics are quite stiff, while the softer ones have no trace of wax at all.
